Behavior Change through Data Visualization
There is no doubt that the effects of climate change are already having an impact on the world. While designing new products and systems can help to minimize impact, the real change needed is human behavior change. This is no small task as it is significantly harder to change old habits and routines than it is to buy a new product that promises a better future. By combining theories on behavior change, habit, psychology and rhetoric towards sustainability with data visualizations, new patterns can be seen. Visualizations of climate data can help us understand numbers and concepts that are often too big to comprehend. Data visualizations can also help to illuminate patterns to understand behaviors, both by individuals and groups, that can help encourage behavior change. Ultimately, we must be the ones to make the choice to change, data can help make us understand, feel and be motivated to do so.
