Design Activism Service Learning
The Design Activism Service Learning course explores ways in which designers can use visual communication as a tool to amplify voices that are normally overlooked or underrepresented in today’s culture. By critically examining the surrounding systems and structures of pressing issues, designers have the potential to become positive agents of change. Students will choose an issue that they are personally passionate about and work through a critical design process to aid an organization working in that field, engage with community members about the topic, and advocate awareness for it.
Many students have expressed concern about the current political climate and its effects on their generation. Climate change, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, racism, immigration, education, health care and many other pressing issues are on everyone’s’ minds. The Design Activism Service Learning class allows students to use their skills as a designer for positive impact and change.
